Exclusive Brian Knox interview at PAX 09

Exclusive Brian Knox interview at PAX 09

What was the original concept of Aion?

We set out to make Aion a global product that would appeal to the entire world. We wanted something that would appeal to the North, the West, the East, and the South, and have the core concept of the game be able to resonate with gamers around the world.

There are a lot of MMOs out there like World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, Warhammer Online, what separates Aion from the rest of the other MMOs?

We've kinda taken the approach of polish and refinement, and making sure we get the best features from everything and add our own flavor, our own twist to it. So you'll see some cool additions, like flight in Aion, that add it as a strategic element. So you'll start seeing flight time and flight speed, both are stats which you can boost as a player. We also kinda put the massive back in mmo. We created a lot persistence zones for the players to form together as a community and create this dynamic experience. We really wanted to focus on this unique world, the quest, the stories, and the creatures that inhabit it.

PvPvE is a new featured that was added to Aion, could you explain some of the details about it?

Yes, this was originally designed so that we can give players another choice, something like the best of everything. It's important that we don't have players feel that they have to run on a certain track, whether that is PvE or PvP. But kinda seamlessly jumping between the two. PvPvE kinda gives you the best of both, it gives you a kind of balance, but also lets the player play in a dynamic atmosphere. So if you kill a raid boss one time, it might be completely different the next time, because the other faction decides to attack you. In the Abyss your pretty much open, so you are going to be fighting against the Balaur, which is a faction, as well as the opposing player faction. So there are fortresses you can capture whether it is from the Balaur, or from the players.

This is one of the question I picked out from the forums. Will players be able to customize their wings in Aion?

Yes, almost every class has a different types of buffs or de-buffs for flight. So the spirit master can grab somebody out of the sky and throw them to the ground. There are other people that can restrain people in mid-air. You can also upgrade your wings. We are giving an exclusive one away in the collectors edition as well. But you can purchase some from vendors, you can get some from quests and drops. So it is an equip-able item slot.

Will there be bonus content online, or will it all be in Aion when it is released?

Right now there is just some pre-order items and some collectors edition items, but nothing for sale online.

Many people say the graphics look anime based. In your opinion is Aion's graphic's anime based and why do you say that? Was it originally planned at the beginning or formed as development continued?

Well, we wanted to make sure that what ever we created was good. So we wanted to create great art and we think we got that. So we put a lot of emphasis on the character creation where you can make anything you want. So with our 1.5 update you can have faces from anime faces to more traditional western faces, like rugged, orcs, and elven faces as well. So you really get to do what ever you want. And within the game world, it's not your traditional fantasy. So you're going to see a lot of things that are sort of twisted and different. I think a lot of the art from the designers is inspired from Miazaki, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle, you can see a lot of that influence there. But yes, it was definitely planned.

Now let̢۪s talk about the engine for Aion. Will players need a giant new gaming computer to be able to run Aion?

I've been kinda telling people that if you have bought a gaming machine within the last 5 years, you're going to be okay running Aion. Our minimum specs are pretty reasonable, a 3 GHz processor, a 5 series GeForce, 512Mb-1Gb of RAM. So it's not too hardcore, it is a newer game, so it does require some of the newer hardware than some of the other mmo's. But it is also built on the Crytech engine, which is from the first FarCry. So there have been a lot of revisions and stability that went into that engine. But it really makes it scale well, we've had hundreds to thousands of players on the screen at one time, and it has been performing really well.

Aion has a crafting system, why should players craft? Is there any real benefit?

There are a lot of consumable benefits which I think have been taken for granted in most crafting. We have a critical system where you get chances to get better items than what you would normally make. Also, gear kinda fills in spots in the leveling, to where you will be able to equip something that you weren't able to normally equip beforehand, and there are lots of really good components. Crafting is a really intricate part to the economy in Aion.

Is the world in Aion completely explorable at your own risk, or do you have to level up to get access to the newer location, do you have to wait for areas to be unlocked over time?

Once you are past level 10, you will be able to explore at your own risk for the most part. There are some areas, such as the Abyss, that you will enter in at level 25, so I would say that it is a variety.

Will players in North America be able to connect to anyone around the world, or only be able to connect with certain regions?

North America and the Oceanic region will be together, and then Europe will be together. So it will be separated out. But we are simultaneously launching North America and Europe.

What do you think about the turnout here at PAX?

It's really impressing, we just did the panel and we had to turn people away. Hundreds of people in there, and the success of Aion over the past year has been, people keep surprising you about how excited they are for the product.

After Aion is released, will you just keep doing updates or will you be working on huge expansion packs?

Well, we will continue to provide content, we aren't talking about any sort of expansion right now, we are still trying to get the game launched. But we are launching with three major updates in this region already that have gone out in just the past couple of weeks. We are just going to continue to provide content to the users, and I would expect most of that to be free, but there is a chance of some content expansions as well.

Different versions of Aion are being released, what are the benefits of each of these versions?

Pre-order will have some benefits, some unique items, access to our head start program. Which will allow you to get in the game about 2 days earlier. Then the Collectors edition will have some exclusive items, a cool figurine, the soundtrack, and some other cool stuff.

Aion has some pretty good music, who did the music and how much music is in Aion in terms of hours?

The music was composed by Yang Ban Ean, who is composer who as done a lot of anime, he has done The Twelve Kingdoms. So he's got a pretty good track record, we recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra. And like I said, the soundtrack is included in the collectors edition. It's really cool and unique music that fits the world of Aion.

Will the music that the player will hear dependent on region or will it just play out as you go along?

It kinda fades in and goes and the play through the game. In a tavern scene at certain hours of a day, they will start to sing the song to you, and in combat you will hear different music, in different zones you will hear different music to fit the mood.

As Aion creeps so close to launch that we can all taste it, NCsoft has released all the details about features coming with the launch version of the game.

Here is the letter from Brian "Xaen" Knox listing it out:
Greetings!

As we draw closer to tomorrow I wanted to give everyone a brief update on the progress of our live version. We are excited to announce that we will be serving out the final update for you to patch within the next few hours. You will be able to use this version for both our Preselection and our Head Start. We are very excited with our final product and think that you will be as well! Below are the release notes for the patch you will see later today:

- Aion now features all three languages French, German and English. To select your language simply right click on Aion within your launcher and go to Properties->Language Options. Please select which languages you wish to download and which you wish Aion to display.

- After analyzing our open beta test results Aion will not feature GameGuard at launch. We will however continue to pursue ways to effectively utilize GameGuard within Aion in the future. Right now we're focused on providing players with the best possible Aion experience.

- The level cap is now level 50 (previously 45).

- Players will be able to reserve 2 character names during Preselection and create 8 characters in total once Head Start begins and beyond.

- Channels will be set to 10 instances for the beginning 2 zones of each faction. Please note that these will be lowered as characters progress and spread throughout Atreia.

Xaen
Aion Producer
Good news, especially for all the grief that the inclusion of GameGuard would cause. Anyone "uncancelling" their preorder yet?

Be a Part of the Time Capsule

Be a Part of the Time Capsule

In an experiment surrounding the launch of a large MMO, we here at the Aion Tower are creating a rudimentary Time Capsule...and we need your help.

You can find all the details here, but basically we need you to email us a quick writeup now about your current impressions, hopes, fears and dreams for Aion.

Then, in six weeks, we're going to request a follow-up from you in which you can discuss how you feel at that juncture.

We'll then take all the materials, and create a before and after mashup chronicling what occurred amongst the community. Feel free to ask questions in the comments section of the Time Capsule page

The Community Time Capsule

The Community Time Capsule

In considering new ways to get the community involved here at the Aion Tower, I thought it might be an interesting idea to create a time capsule, of sorts, for this new MMO.

Basically, the project we're launching is going to occur in two steps, six weeks apart. We'll consider extending it to a third section in three to six months, but it all depends on participation.

What I'd like to gather is the following:

1) Write up a paragraph or two summarizing all of your thoughts on Aion, pre-release. We want to hear about your hopes, your fears, your plans, your goals and any other info you may feel is relevant at this current juncture. Once you've compiled this writeup, email it to us at aion@aion.ign.com with the subject line: "Time Capsule Submission." Make sure you sign it with your username or real name, depending on what you may like mentioned in the future final article.

We'll hold onto all of these emails in an orderly fashion until the point you might just forget about them. We will accept submissions up until midnight on Monday, September 21, 2009. I'd like to extend it for the Europeans, but since we can't verify who comes from where, we're going to have to give a single cutoff time as to not create more biased writeups.

I will print up each and every email and bury them in a shoe box in my backyard*.

*This may or may not literally occur.

2) In six weeks, roughly November 3, 2009, we will request a follow-up submission. By this point, you'll have experienced a good cross section of the game, have had some of your hopes crushed, your fears realized or alleviated, and many hopefully good surprises in between. I'll then dig up the shoebox of original emails, and we'll create a written before and after piece to contrast a little piece of MMO history.

The scope and layout of this article may change or shift depending on the types of submissions we get, and feel free to leave comments with any additional ideas you may have, or questions. We'll announce the start date for the second round of submissions closer to November. If this is successful, I'd like to add a round three in several months, once things are truly up and running.

But for now, to get started, send us your current views in an email to aion@aion.ign.com with the subject line: "Time Capsule Submission."

We'll have to edit out vulgarities and possibly clean up some grammar, but this is a project to showcase the wide range of a new game's community. For you, by you (edited by me).

Good luck!

Fortress Timer Announcement

Fortress Timer Announcement

As we get closer and closer to launch time on September 22nd, players are scrambling to coordinate with their friends to determine which server they will play on. When they announced the server names last week, they also announced that some of them would be attunded to the EST time zone and some to the PST time zone. This is because certain events, like the fortress timers, are scheduled to occur during the prime time evening hours. What does this mean? Well that is what everyone is waiting to find out.

Ayase tweeted with the following updated:

I don't have the fortress times/server schedules on my desk yet, but I know it's in the works to get them here.

Time is running out as pre-order players are going to be able to login on Friday to create up to two characters on servers of their choice. They are going to want this information to help make a properly informed decision.

Stay tuned....

Aion to Launch with Oceanic Server!

Aion to Launch with Oceanic Server!

The guys over at NCSoft have been tweeting all day about big upcoming announcements, and finally, the official site was updated with the announcement of an official Oceanic Server!

The key to launching an MMORPG of Aion's magnitude is communication. We been keeping everyone following the game aware of what our plans are and listened to your feedback, creating a dialog with you. We've also kept an eye on the various Aion communities, talked to Aion community members, and compared what they have said and requested with our beta test data. Based on all this input, we have decided to launch Aion with an Oceanic server set to GMT+10.

Our Oceanic communities have already masterfully executed unofficial polls indicating their server desires. To honor these community efforts, the North American server Nezekan will be adjusted to an Oceanic time zone and event schedule immediately. The server will however not be labeled as an Oceanic server right away, but we plan on changing that in a patch within the first two weeks after launch. We are doing everything we can until then to let everyone know about the plans for Nezekan's future time zone schedule to allow players to make informed decisions.

We experienced some frustrating technical difficulties with the surveys we launched early this week meant to help roleplayers and language-specific communities choose their unofficial game servers. Many Aion communities saw a need to coordinate their members and were much quicker than we were to organize surveys. We have decided to honor their hard work by permanently taking our own survey down, since we have no desire to interfere with what our great communities accomplish or cause confusion. We will continue to work with the fansites in our Fansite Program to promote their community survey results.

Now Oceanic players don't want to get too excited as this server is not located closer to you, but at least the server time is set so that all the main events don't occur during the middle of the night.

Crytek to make CryEngine free to UK universities

Crytek to make CryEngine free to UK universities

Gamesindustry.biz is reporting that Crytek is going to make the CryEngine 1.0, the same engine that powers Aion, available to universities in the United Kingdom. Is this bold move an attempt to train their own future workforce? You betcha!

"Universities are looking to foster creativity and send people out into the industry who have lots of ideas, but it's also about that practical hands-on training so that they know what the limitations are," said Hilton. "It's very easy for students to come out of the academic world and not have a grasp on the realities of making a videogame.

"The more we can get involved with them and give them feedback and access to the tools involved, the more accurate the course will become in training people up."

Crytek hopes to see the CryEngine roll-out within the month in time for the new term, with Hilton's old university Bournemouth one of the first to integrate the tech.

If you are student of the UK looking to become a game designer, be sure to also read the entire article for more information.

Well, you tell us.
