Aion is Live!

Welcome in and join us in the world of Aion! Our servers were brought online as scheduled for 12:00 PDT (20:00 BST, 21:00 CEST). Myriads of players have already connected to our rapidly filling servers. In order to prevent servers from getting overcrowded and suffer from latency issues we have implemented a queuing system that will shuttle players into servers as others leave. We want the game to play well for anyone who enters the game world. The queuing system will continually keep check on each server’s fluctuating population and ease on the throttling when it can. If you are getting a message letting you know that too many users are currently connected, that means that even the queue has filled up.

- Keep in mind that you are now able to create 8 characters rather than the 2 during preselection.

- If the starting area you are in is a little too crowded for your taste, you can change ‘Channel’ in the Menu next to your mini map. Go to “Support” and then to “Change Channel”.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the queuing on our most popular servers but at the same time hope that you will appreciate and get to experience the long-term benefits and the gameplay quality that come with them.

Enjoy Aion!

Server Balancing

Our Preselection phase is now ongoing and servers are filling up fast. In order to make sure that everyone are able to enjoy Aion the way it's meant to be enjoyed, we are required to balance the population out even between our servers. While some empty are full to the bursting, others aren't as filled up. We need to promote characters on these servers in order to reduce latency risks and overcrowding. Total server limits will be increased once we see that server populations balance out. There is room for more players even on some of the most popular servers and we expect to be able to increase the capacity limit by Head Start. We continually monitor our servers in order to keep them balanced, so keep checking back if there's a particular server you are interested in.

Race balancing is a second feature that we need to have in order to keep the game enjoyable. If we let one side in the game grow too large, the game's simply not going to offer the type of challenge we intend for it to. The Balaur will be in there to help balance it out, but we need to prevent too drastic differences. Keep in mind that you may be able to create a character of your selected race later when the two sides have balanced out. You will be able to follow the statistics of your server via our Server Statistics page.

The Aion Community's Server Choices

Finding friends to play with is not always easy. Sometimes it is more fun to playing when you know that you are playing with others in your vicinity or with a similar play-style. In order to help those of you left in a quandary over what server to play on we devised a list of servers and player preferences based on polls and community research.

English should always be the used language in general or regional chat channels on any North American or English-tagged European server. We do however offer language-specific chat channels in Aion for those of you who want to speak other languages. These chat channels can be accessed by clicking the chat bubble on the left hand side of the chat window's input field. Please try to remain within the easily accessible chat channels when speaking other languages as that will ensure that the main chat channel is comprehensive and inviting to everyone.

Keep in mind that we do not provide official support based on the following list. We want to offer it up as guidance for new players who are still trying to decide on where to go. It represents the choices of the many communities in our fansite program and we have worked hard with these fansites for it to be as accurate as possible.

Aion Launch Version!

Greetings!

As we draw closer to tomorrow I wanted to give everyone a brief update on the progress of our live version. We are excited to announce that we will be serving out the final update for you to patch within the next few hours. You will be able to use this version for both our Preselection and our Head Start. We are very excited with our final product and think that you will be as well! Below are the release notes for the patch you will see later today:

- Aion now features all three languages French, German and English. To select your language simply right click on Aion within your launcher and go to Properties->Language Options. Please select which languages you wish to download and which you wish Aion to display.

- After analyzing our open beta test results Aion will not feature GameGuard at launch. We will however continue to pursue ways to effectively utilize GameGuard within Aion in the future. Right now we're focused on providing players with the best possible Aion experience.

- The level cap is now level 50 (previously 45).

- Players will be able to reserve 2 character names during Preselection and create 8 characters in total once Head Start begins and beyond.

- Channels will be set to 10 instances for the beginning 2 zones of each faction. Please note that these will be lowered as characters progress and spread throughout Atreia.

The Fourth Installment of "Tales of Aion

Michael Lafferty at GameZone.com spins the riveting story of "Tales of Aion". The fictional chronicle is the continuing story of the Elyos Esala'ayni and the Asmodian Korasai. This most recent installment, the fourth in the five-part narrative, features Korasai. Now far away from his home of Pandaemonium, the Spiritmaster Korasai and his allies must face a threat in the damp, thick air of Mahindel Swamp. Read the fourth installment now, and catch up on the first three installments, all on GameZone.com. We've provided links to all are four parts below.

Aion to Launch with Oceanic Server!

The key to launching an MMORPG of Aion's magnitude is communication. We've been keeping everyone following the game aware of what our plans are and listened to your feedback, creating a dialog with you. We've also kept an eye on the various Aion communities, talked to Aion community members, and compared what they have said and requested with our beta test data. Based on all this input, we have decided to launch Aion with an Oceanic server set to GMT+10.

Our Oceanic communities have already masterfully executed unofficial polls indicating their server desires. To honor these community efforts, the North American server Nezekan will be adjusted to an Oceanic time zone and event schedule immediately. The server will however not be labeled as an Oceanic server right away, but we plan on changing that in a patch within the first two weeks after launch. We are doing everything we can until then to let everyone know about the plans for Nezekan's future time zone schedule to allow players to make informed decisions.

We experienced some frustrating technical difficulties with the surveys we launched early this week meant to help roleplayers and language-specific communities choose their unofficial game servers. Many Aion communities saw a need to coordinate their members and were much quicker than we were to organize surveys. We have decided to honor their hard work by permanently taking our own survey down, since we have no desire to interfere with what our great communities accomplish or cause confusion. We will continue to work with the fansites in our Fansite Program to promote their community survey results.

Stay tuned for more information on Aion's release, and be sure to follow us on Twitter (@aion_ayase, @aion_liv, @aion_xaen, @aion_amboss.

Aiononline.com is Suiting Up New Player-

The release of Aion marks the beginning of a long anticipated story--your own. We are introducing a wide array of new functions in our website to provide more player-focused information for Aion.

Have you ever been dying to show off some of your character's new equipment to a friend quickly and easily? We have gone to great lengths to make this as easy as it should be. Aiononline.com will soon be updated with a quick character search function and detailed character pages that will allow you and others to view your characters with all their accoutrements directly in a browser. You will also be able to view server statistics and Abyss Rankings in order to follow your own and your friends' progress through the game--or to find out what numbers you need to beat to reach the top!

Aion's official forums will let you socialize with fellow gamers. They will supplement the forums of our fansites to make an excellent medium through which you can get to know other players from the servers you play on.

We will also continue to update and improve the PowerWiki, which will go through numerous changes as we transition to the new website. Its layout will be updated, a lot of new content will be added, and the search function will be improved beyond the previous one.

Aiononline.com is suiting up - and you're invited.

Head Start Gets Detailed

Aion's Head Start is right around the corner. Details surrounding the Preselection program of Aion were very recently announced, but is only one of the benefits of preordering. Those of you who preordered the game will very soon not only be able to access Preselection, where they can create characters and reserve names, but also to leap into the game and explore the world before everyone else. Head Start opens up Aion's full feature set and allows preorder buyers to play the game just as if it was released a couple of days earlier.

Head Start begins on September 20th 12:00 p.m. PDT (more) and runs until release. The official release date of Aion is on September 22nd in North America and September 25th in Europe.

With a resounding "yes" victory, 423 of those questioned did indeed participate in the open beta. No surprises there, haha.

But now, with release merely hours away, all those who preordered got access to a two day head start.

So this week's question...just how much of a head start did you get?

As we count down the minutes to today's head start release at noon PST, players swarm the forums and frantically refresh twitter in hopes of being able to login and play immediately. Realistically, it won't be that smooth, but a small part of us is hoping that because this game has been out for so long that 400,000 pre-orders storming the gates at once shouldn't have any affect, right?

As usual, stay tuned to the Aion Tower for the up-to-the-minute action as we also frantically hammer the server, news sites, and twitter so that you don't have to.

Update 11:30 AM: - The servers have come down in preparation, so character preselection.is officially over.

Update 11:50 AM: - The NCSoft Loader is back up with a message to remind you to get your preorder items.

Update 1:00 PM - They're increasing queue size limit!

Update 2:45 PM - They're increasing queue size limit and discussing a more permanent solution (like more servers?)

Update 3:10 PM - Triniel is currently having login issues and Marchutan is hard down! All of the other servers are experiencing at least a 1 hour wait.

Update 3:30 PM - Marchutan is back up. Triniel continues to experience issues.

Update 4:30 PM - Triniel continues to experience connection and disconnection issues, but the server remains online as some players are able to play. A number of servers are experiencing severe latency in the starting areas as well.

Update 5:30 PM - As we move firmly into prime time, all servers are experiencing high load with over 2 hour waits being the norm. Marchutan is down again.

Update 5:41 PM - Marchutan is back up.

Update 7:10 PM - Azphel is down.

Update 7:40 PM - Azphel is back up with a two hour queue.

Update 9:30 PM - Azphel still struggles with stability. They are going to take another look at it.

PalTalk and Worlds.com Sue NCSoft and Other MMO Companies

PalTalk and Worlds.com Sue NCSoft and Other MMO Companies

PalTalk, holders of two patents, one of which allows for chatting while playing an online game, recently filed a patent infringement lawsuit targeted at NCSoft, Blizzard Entertainment, Sony Online, Turbine Entertainment, and Jagex. PalTalk recently won an undisclosed amount from Microsoft's X-Box Live for a similar patent claim, and now looks to target all the big fishes for their cut of the MMO pie.

Additionally Worlds.com has filed a claim against NCSoft and Activision, parent company of World of Warcraft, for infringing on patents held for "scalable virtual worlds with thousands of users". If successful, they will no doubt target all of the other MMO companies for its share of the wealth.

Add these two babies to a long list of stupid patent lawsuits that have been fought in the last decade. Perhaps it is time to revisit our system?
